Monty Don returned for another installment of Gardeners’ World on BBC Two this evening. Episode 19 of the 2021 series saw Monty embark on a new planting project and share some advice for watering plants in hot weather. Monty, who has been the lead presenter of the show since 2003, said the hot weather has been “tough” on plants.
He added: “The rule of watering is always the same – soak don’t sprinkle.”
By watering directly into the roots of the soil or compost, the roots can get down and find the moisture more easily.
Monty said you should also make sure you water until liquid is running out of the bottom of the container.
He continued: “Finally, just because you’re watering every day, you don’t need to feed any more than normal.
Nick Bailey also featured on the show, travelled to Scotland to investigate a disease affecting trees and shrubs in woodlands and gardens.
Gardeners’ World aired at the earlier time of 7pm this evening to accommodate the first night of the BBC Proms.
Monty told his fans this morning on Twitter: “Gardeners’ World tonight is early at 7pm (brought forward to accommodate the first night of the Proms) and was shot last week at the height of the heatwave.
“There is planting round the new summer house, ferns and sarracenias, tomatoes, lilies, veg and hats.”
